Gender Neutral Bathrooms

Posters Concept

This project is a concept for a poster that advocates for gender neutral bathrooms. I wrote and designed a design brief, which outlines the purpose of the poster, the target audiences, what medium it would be in, and how it should feel.

Design Brief

I stated in the brief that the tone of the poster should have a sense of relief, being free from judgment and pressures of the outside world. I chose this tone because I believe that this feeling is what many who advocate for gender neutral bathrooms are after — the experience of not having to be prepared to feel judgment on your body.

Design Brief for the project

Initial Sketches

My first idea was of a person is sitting in one of the gender neutral bathroom stalls. The scenery around them is dark, but they are lit up by an unseen light source, giving a sense of quietness and relief. The top-most rectangle is the title of the campaign, and the left rectangle is the body content. Both texts would be white to contrast with the dark background, making the hierarchy be the title, then the text, then the person.

For the other idea that I included in the final, I wanted a person to be fixing themselves in the mirror, maybe being away from an event for a moment. The bathroom would be dark and the person would be lit by a light that gives a sense of relief.

It is the same concept as the other thumbnail, but different subject and placement of the side text on the left here is in the light, so as to give a sense of unity between the sense of relief and the text.

Final Designs

I attempted to find images that would fit my initial sketches, and these two are what I found to be closest to my initial ideas. I edited the images by applying shapes with blending modes on top to give the atmosphere that I was going for.
