Design & Digital Media

Brochure & Swag

Sacramento City College’s Design & Digital Media (D&DM) department requested that we create an updated brochure and some merch for them while following their style guide. I started with some sketches for brochure ideas, and the ideas that I felt would create interest in students. The solution I ended up with was to have the folded brochure become the logo of the design department using a box fold.

A set of drawings of various brochure ideas using pockets.

A set of drawings showing a brochure concept. When the pages are closed together, the flaps can hold the brochure together like the lid of a box.

Brochure Rough

My initial idea with the brochure was to have 6 pages and have the flaps for testimonials and contact information. The feedback I got for it was that they wanted to show more information about the program on the brochure, and that the testimonials and contact info might be better on their own pages.

Inside of the brochure rough. It is colored orange and contains the a description of the design program, along with 2 samples of student work.
The outside of the brochure rough. It is colored white with translucent orange squares in the background. It shows 2 samples of student work along with containing a paragraph on the design department's mission statement.

Brochure Final

I added 2 extra pages so that it can show more information. I also decided to give emphasis on the testimonial quote by using bold text along with using the same font size as the headings, because I felt that bold text by itself was not enough.

Brochure Print

For the print ready file I added crop marks for both sides, and bleed for the orange side in Illustrator.

Card Design Ideation

Alongside the brochure design, we also created merch mock-ups for the design department. I initially had an idea for a card game. Eventually, due to the complexity of making a card game, I decided to go with playing cards instead.

Card Design Final

For the playing card designs I decided to arrange basic shapes to foster interest in students using basic design principles. I created a few for each suit to demonstrate how the shapes would be arranged.

Card Design Mockups

I made mockups of the card designs. I took some free stock images of cards and placed my own designs onto them. I made sure they looked as if they were in the same lighting as the original images.
