Chemical Technology Video

Overview

The chemistry department of Sacramento City College requested that we create a video to advertise the Chemical Technology (Chem Tech) career program. This program allows for students to gain laboratory skills through hands-on training, and allows for students to be eligible for being lab technicians in one and a half years.

Project Management

I was project manager for the project and I worked on the motion graphics for the video. As the project manager I was responsible for interviewing the client, scheduling our deliverables, contacting our client, and coordinating filming sessions with interviewees and professors. I also helped with filming of the video for some of the student B-roll.

Motion Graphics

On top of project management, I worked the motion graphics seen in the video. I used sliding motions and wipes as a common pattern throughout the video to create unity between the motion of different visual elements.

Logo Animation

We had to show the logo of the Chem Tech program in the intro. Initially we only had an image of the logo from their brochure. I created a copy of the logo in Adobe Illustrator, and separated the elements by layer to import into After Effects for animation.

For my initial animation, I decided to have each element of the logo pop up using wipes. Please note that the background video was just a placeholder, and wasn’t color corrected during this phase.

After we had started timing the length of the video, we realized the animation needed to be shorter. I combined multiple steps in the initial animation to save up on time, and used this as an opportunity to make the motions snappier.

Certificate Animation

We also had to show information on each of the 3 certificates that the program offered. I sketched some layouts of the type and I had some ideas for how the text move into and out of the section.

This version is the first draft of the certificate animation

After I showed the initial animation to my teammates and the art director, I got feedback that a different layout from a teammate looks better. I worked on animating the layout for it.

And this one is an animation that recaps the video’s main points. The only changes since the initial version were to fit with the new layout of the certificate animation.
